TRAVELS ALONG THE PAINTING PATH

While riding in an old Rambler with my rommmates during my senior year of art school at the University of Connecticut, we were hit by a large six-ton truck whose impact thrust my head out through the windshield and back in again. Sometimes life has to literally hit you on the head to awaken you. My rommate, who was riding in the back seat, ran up the road for help. The first house she came to had the name "FATE" on the mailbox. This revelation, together with my initial thought that I was going to die followed by the realization that I wasnt, sent me on a contemplative journey. Naturally this sudden course of events, and my predisposition to reflection, entered the pathways of my painting.

In addition, this "accident" provided me with the means to further my study of life and painting in France. I chose Besancon, France– a strange Medieval place which may exist only in my memory. In contrast to the experimental and free-spirit 60's lifestyle i enjoyed,I found myself drawing plaster casts in studio s with smocked professors, and models who stood in poses without moving for hours. The strict discipline of this other world taught me an inner composure and patience which complemented my inspiration and allowed my art to evolved. That process has been fulfilling but not always easy– there are dialogues with myself, within the fluidity of past memories, and art history–both written and rewriten. Sometimes my work is a battleground. Sometimes it is the process that's foremost–separated from the end result. Ultimately, I strive to remain aware and open to the wonders around and within me.
